Sonic the Hedgehog x Konix

February 23, 2021

This week’s column will be dedicated to Mario’s great competitor, I’m obviously talking about Sonic. First appearing in 1991 in the arcade game Rad Mobile, Sonic became THE game everyone was talking about after its release on the Megadrive a few months later.

The reason why Sonic was so much in the magazines at the time was because SEGA used the game to highlight the technical capabilities of the Megadrive: it was beautiful, innovative, nervous and what set it apart from its main competitor was the fact that on one side we had a young, charismatic, rebellious, fast protagonist and on the other side a plumber with a moustache that grew when he ate mushrooms. Nintendo focuses more on the family spirit of video games while SEGA seeks to develop an irreverent image. Following its immense success, SEGA will release several Sonic games and they are not about to stop there.

Sonic’s unquestionable success is attested to the imprint he left on pop culture and in the minds of the players of the 90s.

Sega moves away from the console market to become, among other things, a game publisher. Sonic will continue to exist despite the disappearance of SEGA consoles on the market. Sonic will continue its race on other consoles such as the different generations of Playstation, Xbox and even on the consoles of its long-time competitor, Nintendo. Sonic will even be accompanied by its rival Mario in the excellent “Mario & Sonic at the Olympics” games.

Sonic remains one of the most popular characters in the world of video games for 30 years now, but also pop culture in the broadest sense with cartoons and movies. He alone represents the insolence of SEGA against the giant Nintendo during the 1990s.

In order to embody this insolence Konix and SEGA have joined forces to offer you a complete range of accessories in the colors of the legendary Hedgehog.
