Which Gaming Mouse Should You Choose?

September 24th, 2021

Many gaming accessories are available on the market today, from gaming PC to keyboards, headset, etc. A gaming mouse is, however, one of the elements that needs to be privileged on your setup in order to take advantage of your capacities and dexterity when playing. Indeed, having a good gaming mouse can be really advantageous in terms of response time, but also ergonomically and comfortably speaking. You will not be able to blame your bad equipment when you lose anymore!

The differences between a wired and wireless mouse

The first question a gamer asks themselves before buying a gaming mouse is whether it needs to be wired or wireless. Gamers looking performance will usually go for a wireless one because a mouse that runs out of battery when playing can not be a good thing during crucial games! Another advantage of a wired mouse is that there is no latency between the movement of your mouse and your cursor. On the contrary, a quality wireless mouse that provides the same response time as a wired one will be much more expensive.

What is a gaming mouse’s ideal weight?

The weight of a mouse is not to be neglected and can also influence your choice. If you use your mouse quite intensively, you should choose one that is light enough to rest your wrist. In addition, many models also offer weights that allow you to add weight to your mouse, which will maximize your comfort of use and your precision. (Psst, this is the case of our Valkyrie and Fenrir mice!)

What is the ideal shape for a mouse?

Though logical for some, others might not know that an ideal gaming mouse is one that fits best the shape and size of your hand. Thus, you need to avoid mice that are too big if you have small hands and vice versa. If you are left-handed, choose ambidextrous models such as our Tyr mouse.

Understanding the position of the hand

Beyond its size, a gaming mouse can also have different hand grips that can affect the way you play.

Palm Grip: This is the grip of a “traditional” mouse, as the palm of your hand rests against the bottom of the mouse and you can easily give it the direction you want. However, this position can quickly become uncomfortable for people with shorter fingers for a large mouse and vice versa.

Fingertip: the hand does not completely cover the mouse; it is controlled with the fingertips. A position that allows greater responsiveness in terms of rapid movements, but which is not practical for large movements.

Claw Grip: Here, the palm of your hand does not rest on the mouse, but “perches” on it. As your fingers are near the buttons, you won’t have as much pressure on the actual surface of the mouse. This way, you will have more precise movement and control over where you point your mouse, but it can quickly cause tension in your hand.

What does DPI mean?

The “Dot per inch” is a value. The higher the maximum DPI value of the mouse, the more precise the mouse will be. Above 3000 DPI, you can consider that your mouse will stand out from the rest. Most pro gamers play with sensitivities between 400 and 800 DPI and never exceed 4000 DPI. Beware of mice claiming to go up to 10 000 DPI, because beyond that sensitivity, your mouse cursor will move too fast and become uncontrollable.

Understanding the number of buttons on a gaming mouse

A regular computer mouse will mainly have three buttons: right click, left click and a scroll wheel. Gaming mice often have more than three buttons. These buttons are customizable and are used for, among other things:

  • Set up shortcuts: in order to have all the commands you use the most at the tip of your fingers.
  • Change DPI: to increase or change the DPI according to your taste.

The more programmable buttons a gaming mouse has, the greater the possibilities of settings. For MMORPG games, many buttons (preferably at least five side buttons) are recommended. Our Valkyrie, Fenrir and Berserker mice will suit you best if you play these types of games.

In short, a gaming mouse is an essential accessory if you want the best gaming experience possible. Now you have all the information to choose the right gaming mouse for you!
